We are looking for a Senior Data Engineering Manager to lead our data engineering team and oversee the development and implementation of technical solutions for our data platforms. You will be responsible for setting the vision and direction for our data products, ensuring alignment with the Data Office and other stakeholders across the bank and in IT. You will also act as a technical product owner for our cloud data platforms, including Azure Databricks, and collaborate with other product owners and managers to deliver value to our customers. You will guide and mentor our data engineers, foster a culture of innovation and excellence, and promote best practices in data engineering and agile methodologies. You will report to the Chief Data Technology Officer and work closely with the Enterprise Architecture, Info Security and Data Governance organizations.

 

We have an in-office culture and we are not offering hybrid working agreements. Our offices are located at 8750 W. Bryn Mawr, Chicago (near Rosemont and near the blue line Cumberland station, Joliet at 3800 Rock Creek Blvd, and Evansville Indiana.

 

Key Accountabilities

  • Act as a technical product owner for the cloud data platforms, including Azure Databricks, and collaborate with other product owners and managers to deliver value to the customers.
  • Oversee the design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance of data products and platforms, ensuring quality, reliability, and scalability.
  • Establish and enforce data engineering standards, best practices, and guidelines, and ensure compliance with the enterprise data architecture and governance frameworks.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve data issues, and ensure data quality and security.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and coaching to the data engineers, and foster a culture of innovation and excellence.
  • Position may require the need to travel to other branch or meeting locations.

Key Accountability: Data product development and team leadership.

  • Lead and manage the data engineering team, including hiring, onboarding, performance management, career development, and retention.
  • Define and communicate the data engineering vision, roadmap, and backlog, and ensure alignment with the Data Office and other stakeholders.
  • Act as a technical product owner for the cloud data platforms, including Azure Databricks, and collaborate with other product owners and managers to deliver value to the customers.
  • Oversee the design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance of data products and platforms, ensuring quality, reliability, and scalability.

Key Accountability : Technical leadership and guidance.

  • Establish and enforce data engineering standards, best practices, and guidelines, and ensure compliance with the enterprise data architecture and governance frameworks.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve data issues, and ensure data quality and security.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and coaching to the data engineers, and foster a culture of innovation and excellence.

Key Accountability: Forward thinking and leadership communications.

  • Stay abreast of the latest trends and technologies in data engineering and cloud data platforms, and evaluate and recommend new solutions and tools.
  • Prepare and present data engineering reports, dashboards, and metrics to senior leadership and business partners.

Key Competencies for Position

  • Ability to lead, inspire, and empower a team of data engineers, providing clear direction, feedback, and coaching.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and persuasively with senior leadership, business partners, and technical teams, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to define and execute a data engineering strategy that supports the bank's data vision and goals, and aligns with the enterprise data architecture and governance frameworks.
  • Ability to manage the end-to-end delivery of data products, from ideation to deployment, using agile and lean principles and practices.
  • Ability to prioritize and balance multiple projects and initiatives, and manage stakeholder expectations and dependencies.
  • Technical passion and curiosity to explore and adopt new technologies and approaches for data engineering and cloud data platforms.

 

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Over 8 years of experience in data engineering, including developing ETL/ELT, data pipelines, data lakes, data warehouses, and data integration solutions.
  • Over 3 years of experience in managing and leading data engineering teams, preferably in a financial services or banking domain.
  • Over 3 years of experience in working with cloud data platforms, ideally Azure Databricks, and other Azure data services such as Data Factory, Data Lake Storage, Synapse Analytics, etc.
  • Over 3 years of experience in acting as a technical product owner or a product manager for data products, platforms, or solutions, using agile frameworks such as Scrum or Kanban.
  • Expertise in building scalable, reliable, and secure data products and platforms, using metadata driven, event driven, and API driven approaches.
  • Experience in working with stakeholders on gathering requirements, defining user stories, and translating them to data solutions, with a focus on developing reusable and modular components.
  • Experience in scripting tools such as Python, C#, or PowerShell.
  • Experience in orchestration tools or job schedulers, such as Azure Data Factory, Airflow, or Luigi.
  • Experience in data modeling, data quality, data governance, and data security standards and best practices.
  • Experience in code repositories and version control tools such as Azure DevOps, Git, etc.
  • Experience in analytical and data visualization tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or Qlik.
  • Experience in working with Salesforce data and digital banking data is a plus.
  • Very good working experience of T-SQL. Proficiency in complex stored procedures, user defined functions, and query optimization.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
