Responsibilities

The Credit Officer is a senior-level credit professional responsible for maintaining a high-quality commercial loan portfolio. As an expert in credit underwriting, this individual will assess, structure, and approve complex credit transactions while ensuring adherence to the bank’s risk policies and regulatory standards. While most Credit Officers will be individual contributors, some may have leadership responsibilities. Reporting to a Senior Credit Officer, this role collaborates closely with Commercial Relationship Managers and Portfolio Managers to support business growth while managing risk effectively.

 

Key Accountabilities

Ensure credit quality targets for the loan portfolio are met

  • Underwrite and analyze complex commercial loan applications, ensuring risk assessments and asset quality ratings are accurate.
  • Engage with Credit Administration to leverage portfolio data, industry trends, and market insights for sound decision-making.
  • Ensure compliance with corporate credit policies, loan standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor and assess the commercial loan portfolio, identifying areas of risk, concern, or growth opportunities.

Review and Approve Loan Transactions

  • Evaluate and decision commercial loan requests within assigned credit authority.
  • Provide expert credit guidance and recommendations to Relationship Managers and other stakeholders.
  • Support Senior Credit Officers by reviewing and escalating complex credit transactions as necessary.

Collaborate and Maintain a High-Performing Credit Environment

  • Work closely with Commercial Relationship Managers, Portfolio Managers, and Documentation Specialists to ensure well-structured credit applications.
  • Participate in loan committee discussions, providing insight into underwriting decisions and risk assessment.
  • Contribute to internal audits, regulatory exams, and loan review processes as needed.

Coach and Develop Credit Talent (as Applicable)

  • Support junior team members by sharing expertise and best practices in underwriting and credit structuring.
  • Provide informal coaching and development opportunities for Portfolio Managers and Analysts.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 7+ years of experience in commercial underwriting, credit analysis, or a related function.
  • Strong knowledge of financial statement analysis, loan structuring, and commercial lending principles.
  • Familiarity with bank credit policies, risk management, and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience in analyzing risks across various industries and market segments.
  • Ability to work independently and make informed credit decisions while escalating complex deals appropriately.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills for partnering with internal stakeholders.
  • Previous management or leadership experience is a plus but not required.
