This position is responsible for the management of Corporate and Mid-Corporate Leveraged Finance Commercial Underwriters and the credit process in one or more locations ensuring that the processes and procedures are adhered to for sound financial underwriting of Commercial Banking transactions. This position includes underwriting complex credit requests and monitoring compliance with approved commercial loan servicing requirements and financial covenants. The Underwriting Manager also monitors portfolio quality and ensures proper Asset Quality Rating guidelines are adhered to.
Salary Range
The salary range for this position is $136,000 - $279,100 per year plus bonus. The base salary indicated for this position reflects the compensation range applicable to all levels of the role across the United States. Actual salary offers within this range may vary based on a number of factors, including the specific responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s relevant skills and professional experience, educational qualifications, and geographic location.
Key Accountabilities
Manage a team of Underwriters Supporting Various Lines of Business and Teams
- Manages team of Underwriters under minimal guidance from the Senior Credit Officers and Segment Chief Credit Officer
- Assists in prioritizing and managing workflows to meet the needs for the assigned lending teams
- Provides training and guidance in completion of credit underwriting, preparation of approval presentations, risk management, monitoring and tracking
- Verifies that the team is conducting in depth review of balance sheet, income statement, other financial information, tax returns, business plans and projections to independently determine that the borrower can generate income and cash flow sufficient to repay existing and proposed debt
- Verifies that the team is conducting proper collateral analysis including Enterprise Valuations when appropriate
- Ensures that presentations are thorough, accurate, properly identifies and mitigates risk, assigned and justifies proper Asset Quality Ratings and adheres to Regulations and Bank guidelines
- Ensures the team is meeting or exceeding productivity expectations including appropriate turnaround times
- Manages the quarterly portfolio review process to ensure all relationships are reviewed and Special Asset Reports are prepared as well as follow up tasks are completed timely
- Accompanies Commercial Relationship Managers on client and prospect calls
- Confirms that the team is reviewing third party reports such as Quality of Earnings Reports, ESOP valuations, real estate appraisals, property condition and environmental reports, Field Exams and or property inspections and environmental investigations
- Maintains a network of financial and legal professionals to support the knowledge necessary to complete any necessary analysis.
Underwrite Corporate, Mid-Corporate and Specialty Loans
- Willing to underwrite renewals and new complex credit requests as needed, after performing appropriate and independent due diligence, risk assessment, analysis of repayment ability and asset quality ratings (AQR)
- Meet quality standards and complete required underwriting guidelines as outlined in ONB loan standards (policies, guidelines, and procedures); third-party evaluation by Loan Review, OCC, as well as ONB Senior Management and/or others will be the focal point on analysis in determining level of underwriting and accuracy of Asset Quality Ratings (AQR)
- Confidently and independently make prudent credit recommendations balancing risk and growth via problem solving/sound decision making and with integrity
- Produce a high quality and accurate analysis without sacrificing efficiency in a fast-paced, high-volume environment where multiple credit requests must be prioritized to meet client driven response timelines
- Develop and maintain in depth knowledge of ONB Commercial Online System and covenant libraries
- Maintain an Individual Development Plan (IDP) adjusted annually (minimally) with specific training goals, action plans and long-term guidance.
Partner with respective Corporate and Mid-Corporate Relationship Managers as well as Treasury Management Partners
- Provide credit expertise using a consultative approach; assist in structuring loans applying ONB guidelines and standards, proficient knowledge relating to credit, accounting and legal concepts, and risk assessment and analysis
- Propose options and alternatives based on an exceptional understanding of the ONB credit appetite, repayment risk, client’s request, and competitive landscape
- Effectively communicate risks, questions, and options to RM seeking win-win solutions
- Deliver exceptional internal customer service and adopt new processes and new tools, as available
- Develop and enhance knowledge of assigned segmentation and portfolio by leveraging internal and external resources and expertise
- Create strong partnerships with team members on revenue generating sales team, support teams and others in Credit to ensure a collaborative team and an empowered environment
Monitor Corporate and Mid-Corporate Portfolios
- Manage the portfolio review process and ensures proper asset quality ratings (AQR) are assigned on the loan system
- Work with assigned Relationship Managers to monitor the credit portfolio to maintain strong asset quality; review trend analysis reports, address covenant violation and default situations, delinquencies, review maturing notes, receipt of financial information, and Borrowing Base Certificate (BBC) reports and other reports as appropriate
- Prepare credit data in Special Assets Assessment and Action Summary (SAAAS) and Upgrade Hurdles, as necessary, working with assigned Relationship Managers
- Monitor overlines and Treasury Management/ACH risk reports or other trends, as appropriate
- Monitor over advances on borrowing base structures in adherence with ONB guidelines
- Serve as a lead on industry analysis (by segmentation) including industry reviews, AQR projects and others as assigned

Qualifications and Education Requirements
- 15+ years of progressive experience with Commercial Credit including at least 10+ years of experience in the large Corporate, Mid-Corporate and/or Sponsor Finance segments.
- 15+ years of managerial experience
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting or related field OR equivalent experience
- Master’s degree preferred
- Thorough knowledge of Enterprise Value lending is required
- Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills
- Demonstrates leadership qualities and strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal with a willingness to train/mentor peers
- Proven ability to quicky assess issues, apply credit policy, offer options and alternatives, come to an independent, timely and accurate decision on complex credit requests and understand the impact of decisions
